St. Baldrick’s Foundation Helping Kids Fight Cancer by Candy Campbell

A few years ago a friend of mine asked me to shave HER head for her nephew who was sick with Cancer and undergoing treatment to which he had lost his hair. Without a doubt, I said yes even though she had very long hair! I was surprised but also very moved for her cause. She told me she was going to shave her head at a St. Baldrick’s event. I shaved her head and many others that day. It was a fun event and I was moved by the passion people had to show their support for curing cancer. Since, then I have done two other St. Baldrick’s events and this year will be my third! I am looking forward to meeting new people that are brave enough to shave their head for a great cause for kids with Cancer.

St. Baldrick’s head shaving events began as a challenge between businessmen. Tim Kenny issued a challenge to colleagues John Bender and Enda McDonnell. Enda’s thick head of hair gave John the big idea to shave heads for donations to raise funds for kids with Cancer. St. Baldrick’s head shaving events have grown from one event in 2000 to over 1,300 events all over the country by 2012 raising critical funds for childhood cancer and research. This year’s St.Balrick’s event takes place at:

How can I get involved in St. Baldrick’s?

  • You can participate as a volunteer, Barber, cosmetologist or as a shavee.
  •  If you want you can start your own event.
  • You can view a child’s profile and pick a child to make a donation.

Why Shave Your Head?

Because kids with cancer often lose their hair during treatment “Shavees” for St. Baldrick’s foundation show their support by shaving their heads voluntarily and inspiring friends and family to donate money to support childhood cancer research.
